Becoming a Member
Becoming a member simply involves signing our membership book at a ceremony that we offer several times a year. However, the decision to participate in the membership ceremony is one to be taken seriously. Your signature in our membership book affirms your commitment to accept the following responsibilities and enjoy the following benefits:
- Benefits
- Voting rights as a stakeholder in the Fellowship – to participate in the important decisions of our congregation.
- Aligning your actions with your beliefs and publicly affirming your support for the actions and values of Unitarian Universalism.
- Making a visible commitment to belonging to this congregation, entering into our community covenant, and supporting our shared future.
- Ability to serve on the Board of Directors as an officer or as a Program Trustee.
- Waiver of facility use fees for member’s personal events (such as weddings/commitment ceremonies, child dedications, memorial services, or other commemorations.) Custodial fees still apply.
- Membership in the UU Pacific Central District (along with the right to attend annual District Assembly and other meetings) and the Unitarian Universalist Association (with the right to attend annual General Assembly and other denominational meetings) and a subscription to The UU World magazine.
- Responsibilities
- Volunteer an appropriate amount of time and energy in support of the Fellowship, according to your talents, ability, and schedule.
- Provide a personally meaningful level of financial support for the Fellowship in recognition of your role as a members, property owner, and employer. This contribution is tax deductible.
- Uphold the Fellowship’s commitment to maintaining a Safe Congregation, which includes emotional, spiritual, physical safety.
- Act upon Unitarian Universalist principles and values in reaching out to the wider world through personal example, volunteer service, and political action.
We hope that your association with UUFLG will be a long, productive, meaningful, and happy one. We also know that people move, lives change, and priorities sometimes shift. Should you choose to become a member and then later decide that it is no longer the right path for you, we request that you speak with our minister.
What if you want to be involved at UUFLG, but aren’t ready to "sign the book"? Those who do not choose to become members, but regularly participate in the UUFLG community are known as "friends" of the Fellowship. Many of our friends are actively engaged in classes and activities as well as volunteer opportunities at the Fellowship. Friends are invited to contribute financially according to their ability to help pay for the programs, ministry, and facility that they enjoy.
Friends are welcome to make an annual pledge or put contributions in the collection basket during Sunday service. Cash contributions that are placed in the collection basket (in the envelopes provided, with your name and address written on the front) are recorded by our bookkeeper and are thus tax deductible. Master receipts for the calendar year are sent to all contributors of record each January.
